My raspberry pi 5 is the most unreliable machine I own. It goes offline / dead randomly after months of uptime. I literally use it for nothing more than an IRC shell. I always keep it updated and reboot when needed (kernel update). But so many times I try to ssh in and it’s just dead. Ridiculous.

I think I might reflash it with a fresh OS. What do people recommend for an 8GB (memory) one of these? I’ve just been using their standard Linux which is some repackaged Debian.

Update 2: this same Raspberry Pi died. I didn't have a console cable so I couldn't exactly diagnose why. But no amount of reboots would bring it back. I eventually just re-flashed the SD card with a fresh install and now it is fine (used the same SD card which reports it is totally fine and seems to work perfectly still).
Todo:
Track down a serial console for next fail.
Get a M.2 HAT+ and a NVMe disk

@bryan This week I bought a pair of used chinese fanless POS* PCs for ~190 USD (256gb SSD, 16 GB DDR3 Ram). Only cpu is weak (core I5-7200U , that's 2/4 cores) .

* as in Point Of Sale though all interpretations are open :-)

Still they run Proxmox + PBS fine and the benchmarks for this CPU are close to the Pi 5.

And all it lacked was the powerbrick (center negative though !!). Also seller thought it was a 4200U.

@santi I actually have a Seagate 1TB external spinning disk. But the rpi5 doesn’t have more than 1 USB-C (which is the power). It’s like a constant never ending quest to get little accessories, cables, adaptors, fans, etc. 😵‍💫

@bryan I had extreme stability issues with my raspberry pi 5 8GB as well. It randomly crashed when I copied data onto the internal SSD I had it running on. What solved it immediately was switching to a different (non-metallic) casing. Somehow some piece of the pi must have touched some part of the case. Now with a plastic case it has been 100% stable for months.
