figured out what was going on. seems #github sometimes does this. when I closed the tab it went away. not sure if this a new thing github is doing or if it's newer #safari on #macOS.

fresh tab open with #github and spike doesn't return. maybe i need to click around in the UI a bit before it starts to give me little spikes.

Or maybe just leave it in background for awhile?
