People jumping from one distro to another may still have to make peace with LLM code in the linux kernel in the new distro. However many folks are looking to simply minimize LLM code in their stack. So, rejecting some linux distributions over others; isn't as fallacious as it might at first seem, from a "harm reduction" point of view.

Open source/free software carries with it an implicit message that folks can and should care about how their software is put together.

While macOS contains many FLOSS elements, it isn't fully free/open; and is therefore a little out of sight out of mind, by being proprietary. OR to state it differently: fewer users see/appreciate how the sausage is made.

@bryan im not sure if llm is being used at this point don't care. its just a tool. im still using #linux and #bsd and if they use llm ill accept the risk.

there's quite the difference between johnny-engineer using llm and johnny-twitch-simp using llm one-shots.

where i draw the line is when the rads come in and shamed be for being interested in this stuff.

Agree. I am not worried at all. I assume a lot more code is LLM-generated than we think; many are unwilling to admit it from social pressure.

@bryan @jae That’s a weird interpretation. I don’t think anyone who would give up a Linux distro because of LLM usage is happy about the kernel using LLMs, it’s just that’s harder to switch away from. Even if one can’t avoid LLM-tainted software completely it’s not unreasonable to avoid it where it’s possible to avoid.

i fed ai the entire thread/your profile. it ended up saying you were passive aggressive, then proceeded to give me a recipe for nachos.

I apologise for wasting your time. It’s clear that you’ve already decided that you’re in the right and you simply want to dismiss any criticisms of LLM usage.

@benjamineskola @jae I don’t appreciate nor like how LLM have turned some prompt writers into junk code submitters. An LLM is in a sense like a gun, where weak, unskilled people suddenly declare themselves warriors. They are not, and it’s wasting everyone’s time.

At the same time, these tools are not ever going away. An LLM is a downloadable gun. The tools are as easy to use and install as vim, emacs, etc. The tide has turned, as they say, and the world is not going back. This is why I do think it’s hard to understand why people would give up a distro or software they’ve used and loved. Because the writers of said software have decided to use a new tool? I get the gut feeling of wanting to lash out. But I don’t think it is a long-term rational move.

@bryan @benjamineskola well said. ive seen too many ytbros and junior warriors produce the slop called out by the naysayers. weapons and tools require training, practice, and foundational knowledge. llm likely more so than a firearm
