jump to repliesInstalled 0.22.0-rc2 of #GotoSocial and added like 8 relays that are supposedly open. So far just one has accepted my connection. 😕 I wonder how many I should subscribe to so my server feels less isolated.

@jae I’m basically waiting for 2-3 to accept then I’ll remove some. Seeing many relays only having 100-500 servers seems kind of weak. There is something like 12-20k individual servers out there so I’d still only see a tiny fraction of ActivityPub traffic.

@bryan rc2? you're living a wild life!
@bryan
Give https://relay.dresden.network/ a try.
@dnkrupinski just added! Hope they click approve or whatever it takes... 😅
@bryan … and don't forget to follow hashtags you are interested in.
@dnkrupinski I was under the impression that just accepting traffic from a relay didn’t mean I needed to follow anything specific? I like to look at hashtags but I don’t need all crammed into my home feed? Right?
@bryan As far as i know there is no feedback for the relay server. This was confirmed by the admin of dresden.network:
@bryan As far as i understand the ActivityPub protocol you have to decide which accounts or hashtags to follow to get your feed filled.
The relay server will not give you messages it just gives you "access" to more "known" servers.
That said: You have to follow accounts and/or hashtags to get your feed filled.
@dnkrupinski @bryan That's not really how it works. When you subscribe to a relay it pushes to your inbox Announces of posts that people from other instances have sent to the relay. Your instance then fetches the original posts and stores them in the db, making them available in the federated timeline. Though not in the home timeline, which is indeed only for people you follow.
Thanks for the explanation.
@dumpsterqueer @dnkrupinski Yeah I'm looking to fill up my federated timeline. I've been writing my own Mastodon client for iOS and one of the features is hashtag groups. I have these clusters of hashtags that I can switch too instead of home timeline. Right now I follow like 100 hashtags via relay.fedi.buzz using the @tag-<hashtag>@relay.fedi.buzz syntax. Would prefer to just get entire raw stream of posts.
@bryan Can you say which relays have worked and which haven't? It's also possibly some incompatibility between GtS and other relay softwares; not all of them use authenticated fetch iirc.
@dumpsterqueer sure! Here is a screenshot of the relays I've added and the status I see in the Admin panel. I found most on https://relaylist.com
@bryan mmm I see, for some of those it's not really clear whether admin approval is required... I'd just wait and see :) but certainly there's a lot of different relay softwares out there and probably not all of them will work with GtS yet, it's gonna be a process of debugging which and why over the coming months I expect
@dumpsterqueer
Many of these look to be using the same relay software, so if there is some bug to fix it should help a good chunk of this list.
Also it seems that last one in my list is confirmed by the guy who runs it anyone can just connect and it will automatically approve (still doesn’t work).

@bryan alright, we'll have to check it out. Could you open an issue for it on the gts repo? Then we can start poking at it

Thanks for all your hard work! If you'd like me to collect logs or something let me know. Unfortunately I live in Hawaii so our timezones are not aligned so will be a delay.
Thanks again!
