@bryan I think filtering is generally handled client-side, and gotosocial doesn’t have a client/end-user frontend by design, so this would be out of scope.
FWIW I manage all my hashtag following/muting/blocking in the Ivory client.

It’s kind of both? I also use Ivory, and the block hashtag ability is not available to me using a gotosocial account. I wish, but then how would using different clients be in sync? I’d need to block a hashtag everywhere: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Linux box, web browser, etc.
Even on my iPhone, I will sometimes use the Ice Cubes app. So client-side would be great, but it seems everything moved on to this new way:
